The STA Level 2 Award in Pool Lifeguarding is a five-day lifesaving course for those who may be required to perform pool rescue techniques including spinal injury management, administering first aid or performing CPR in a poolside emergency. This qualification may be a mandatory requirement for swimming pools where it has been identified that constant poolside supervision is required in order to meet their heath and safety responsibilities.
The STA Level 2 Award in Pool Lifeguarding gives learners the knowledge, understanding and skills to provide constant poolside supervision of a swimming pool and deal with poolside emergencies as required. Upon successful completion of this qualification, learners may work in a pool lifeguard role.
Learners may complete this qualification to work specifically as a pool lifeguard, alternatively they may undertake this qualification to compliment another role.
The course is comprised of a mixture of theoretical technical knowledge, practical dry side first aid training and practical poolside learning. The skills covered include pool rescue techniques and administering first aid/CPR.

On the final day, the learners will complete an external assessment during which the assessor will assess a range of practical poolside rescue skills, timed swims, first aid and CPR.
This course carries a 3-year validity period—learners are encouraged to keep their knowledge and skills up to date through regular staff training.
The learner is required to complete a minimum of 24 hours across the 3-year period to be eligible to take a Pool Lifeguarding revalidation assessment. Learners must successfully complete the revalidation assessment before their certificate expiry date to remain qualified.
